Letters to the Earth Education Initiative for COP30

Published on September 4, 2025

Ecojesuit has launched the Letters to the Earth Education Initiative, inviting young people to express their concerns, hopes, and commitments toward Our Common Home. This initiative supports preparations for COP30, the 30th UN Climate Change Conference, taking place in Brazil this November, and is part of the broader Jesuits for Climate Justice: Faith in Action at COP30 campaign.

Through personal letters, artwork, and innovative responses, students and young participants are encouraged to engage in thoughtful reflection on ecological justice. By connecting Jesuit works across continents and amplifying youth voices on this critical issue, Ecojesuit hopes to inspire a global ecological conversion grounded in sustainability and justice.

To support this effort, the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat (SJES) has developed age-appropriate educational resources for classrooms, homes, communities, parishes, and other learning environments. This comprehensive digital package includes educational handbooks for children and young people ages 7 to 18 and a toolkit for educators.

The student booklets introduce key ecological and theological concepts from Laudato Sí and Laudate Deum and include reflection questions, scripture-based meditations, and real-life case studies from Jesuit ministries worldwide.

The educator’s toolkit offers templates for classroom projects centred on climate justice, food sovereignty, and just transition. It uses an interdisciplinary approach that integrates science, ethics, faith, and social studies and includes visual and audio prayer resources focused on agroecology and sustainability in Jesuit education. Topics include agroecological principles, food justice, community gardens, eco-literacy, soil restoration, agroforestry, water harvesting, sustainable food initiatives, composting, urban permaculture, biodiesel from waste oil, campus gardens, and food justice partnerships.

Additionally, SJES has developed downloadable and printable reflection cards featuring ecological quotes from Pope Francis, Jesuits, and other spiritual and ecological leaders. Each card encourages small actions and provides discussion questions.

All these materials are available in English, with Spanish and French translations available soon.
